Mary Agnes Hoole was born in Sheffield in 1848, the eldest daughter of Charles Hoole (1805 - 1876) of Hallam Gate, Crookes, who was a successful grocer and who also served as director of both Sheffield Gas and Water Companies. Mary Agnes Hoole married John Kirkby Swift (1844 - 1895), a cigar and tobacco manufacturer, of Sale Hill, Sheffield on 23 Mar 1871 at St Thomas' Church, Crookes. The couple later lived at Pisgah House, Crookes Road, Crookes.
